Tile Flooring Trends 2019

We spoke with Italia Ceramics’ Architectural Representative Michael Razzano to find out the tile flooring trends of 2019, what is up and coming and what has continued on from 2018.

Michael celebrates 10 years this year with Italia Ceramics, and has had extensive experience in the architectural and design industry. Michael is passionate about his role, and particularly enjoys working on commercial projects. His favourite trends for 2019 are terracotta and terrazzo tiles.

In 2018 the concrete look was extremely popular, appearing in many homes and taking over many Pinterest accounts. Whilst concrete was and still remains on trend in 2019, there has been an increase in the demand for earthy colours.

Marble look was another massive tile flooring trend in 2018, which Michael says will continue to remain on trend as it is a classic look which doesn’t date. Although so far in 2019, stone look tiles and terrazzo look tiles are taking over.

Terrazzo

We have seen Terrazzo become a large tile flooring trend interstate, and now we are beginning to see it also take off in South Australia. Both real terrazzo and terrazzo look tiles are trending, in all different colours, and this is definitely one of our favourite tile trends of the year.

Colours

As mentioned earlier, warm earthy colours have become a colour trend in 2019, think terracotta, beige, sand looks and colours. By choosing neutral colours when tiling your floor, it will create a warmer ambiance throughout your home.

Tile Finishes

In terms of the finish of a tile, matte finishes is a trend that has continued on into 2019. Matte tiles have many benefits including that they:

  • are more slip resistant

  • are easy to clean

  • show less dirt.

Format

Large format tiles are definitely a popular tile flooring trend to jump on board with – with sizes ranging from 600x1200, 2400x1200, even 3200x1600. When using large format tiles, they open spaces and gives the illusion that the room is bigger than what it is, for example larger format tiles in smaller bathroom spaces will help to open it up more. Less grout is required with large format tiles, creating a more seamless and aesthetically pleasing finish to the room. For the ultimate large format tile inspiration, check out our Grande Porcelain Slabs by Marazzi.

In contrast, small format tiles are also on trend – e.g. 100x100, 200x200.
The smaller format tiles help create a different look throughout your home, and allow you to create intricate patterns. Have a look at our Chalk Series here for some inspiration of smaller format tiles for your home.

Time to think outside of the box…or house.
The 20mm Porcelain Pavers are definitely a tile flooring trend for your outside surfaces, and the reason they are so popular may not only have to do with how great they look, but the many benefits that come with choosing the 20mm Porcelain Pavers, including:

  • being maintenance free

  • they don’t stain

  • easy to install

  • water absorption less than 0.5%.
