OUR STORY
A true Australian immigrant success story, Italia Ceramics began in 1973 when Pasquale Vozzo became one of the first importers of exclusive Italian designer ceramic tiles to Australia.
Pasquale the pioneer
Born in the beautiful coastal town of Roccella Jonica, in Calabria, southern Italy – where he learnt trades and became a skilled Master Joinery Craftsman – Pasquale immigrated to Australia at the age of 16 with his mother in 1954, joining his father and sister who had already settled in Adelaide.
Young Pasquale worked as a carpenter and joiner, driven by a determination to be successful and provide for his family. After quickly earning a reputation as an artisan of quality workmanship, Pasquale soon established his own workshop with apprentices.
In 1957, Pasquale obtained his builder’s licence and started his own business, Glynde Joinery Works and Building Contractor, which he operated successfully throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, constructing many residential homes and commercial buildings in South Australia – including his first family home.

A family affair
Just one year later in 1958, Pasquale met Rosemary “Rosa” Fazzalari, daughter of Ilario Fazzalari (the co-founder of the Society of Saint Hilarion) and Santina Fazzalari (nee Ciccarello), who hailed from Caulonia, the same southern Italian town as Pasquale's father.
Pasquale and Rosa married on 1 October 1960, and were blessed with four children between 1962 and 1973: Vince, Larry, Robert, and Maria.
Building a legacy
With an outstanding reputation for quality building work, Pasquale expanded the business by forming Provident Constructions in 1970, which also developed on land purchased by an affiliated real estate business. Known for his honesty, craftsmanship, and dedication to perfectionism, Pasquale had an ongoing waitlist of locals who only wanted him to build their home.
At that time, leading builders, interior designers, architects and home renovators struggled to access the unique style and quality found in imported Italian floor and wall tiles.
During construction of another family home that year (which would later be completed in 1973), Pasquale experienced this disappointment for himself, as he couldn’t find the stylish, premium tiles and stone he was hoping for in his own home.
And so in 1972, Pasquale travelled to Italy and brought home the best in contemporary ceramic tile and natural stone, furniture, lighting, and homewares for his home. He returned to Europe again soon after, buying more tiles and lighting which he went on to sell from the back shed of his family home.
Italia Ceramics is born
Seeing an opportunity to pioneer the importation and sale of quality Italian Ceramic tiles and stone in South Australia, Pasquale founded Italia Ceramics Supplies of Australia (Italia Ceramics) in 1973.
A direct importer of hard-to-source European tiles, Italia Ceramics was also one of Australia’s first Italian ceramic floor and wall distributors.
With our first showroom and warehouse at 25 Provident Avenue, Glynde, the business quickly gained a reputation as a unique tile and stone retail, trade and wholesale destination.
By 1983, we had quickly outgrown our original site and moved to 55 Glynburn Road, Glynde, where we still are today. During that decade, Pasquale established our commercial sales division and Natural Stone Benchtop fabrication and installation business.
In the decades since, Italia Ceramics has remained a family-owned business with a strong history of success and growth. The second generation family members have diversified and expanded Pasquale’s vision of the business, to become leaders in the Australian tile and stone industry.
A new page in our history book
An innovative pioneer, Pasquale founded Italia Ceramics with a vision of helping customers create the next level in living, by providing a truly extraordinary lifestyle for all! And although we have grown considerably over the past 50 years, we have certainly stayed true to his vision.
Pasquale always said “Italia Ceramics doesn’t sell products, it sells lifestyles.” And so we continue to make it our mission to help customers create the ‘wow factor’ with stylish homes and spaces that bring their dreams to life.
Our story is steeped in a rich and memorable family heritage – a journey of risk, persistence, and passion. And as the Vozzo family adds new chapters to Pasquale’s story, it is always with a nod to our pioneering forefather, who left a legacy of style, innovation, inspiration, honesty, and generosity that continues to this day.
